March 05 3/28/05 Check out World
Photo Day 2005. I signed up today. 3/27/05 PAW #13 The arts remain an important part of Rhode Islands identity and economy. Providence, Pawtucket, and the state all say they want to encourage and nurture this trend. But if they truly do, theyll need to help ensure that price and code issues dont drive out the artists responsible for this activity. From a recent Providence Phoenix Article 3/26/05 3/24/05 So the more that I read and learn about building websites, the more I want to scratch my whole site and start over. Since i dont really want to do that, I'll keep it and try to correct some things as I go. I realize that Ive got too many nested tables which slows things down when loading the site. Ive been going through and taking out unnecessary tables and centering the text. Even after doing this I know there are lots I need to fix. As my site grows its quite a hassle to make changes to the background and font, things like that. So, I want to learn to use CSS so that when I want to try changing a background it'll change every page at the same time. Im sure these are pretty basic things for those who know more about designing websites, but Im learning. Also, I want to design my site without using tables at all for layout. Been checking out some web design forums and just reading the posts there to learn what people are doing. Sometimes it makes my head spin when I realize how much information there is, but since I started out knowing absolutely nothing I figure Im doing ok. As far as things that actually visually show up, I need to fix my galleries by making the photos larger and more catagorized. This weekend Im going to go through my prints, group them together and rescan them to basically start over. How to present the galleries, Im not sure yet. Check out my new link about art and architecture in Providence - Art In Ruins 3/22/05 Here are 4 of my photos I submitted to this B/W photography website.
3/21/05 Today I was checking out Ebay and decided to put up my first listing. At some point I'll put up a store and have more for sale, but for now I'll add a few more and see what happens. 3/20/05 So I've decided to give ArtByUs.com another try for selling my photos. Ive uploaded about a dozen images so far and will add some more soon. For those of you reading this, if you buy a photo and mention that you learned about this in my journal, I'll give you a second print of your choosing for free. Just email me when you buy a print that's listed. I really dont expect to sell anything, but you never know. view my ArtByUs gallery Dad, if your reading this, thanks again!!!
3/18/05 Although the label straight can be attached to his work, this does not prevent it from being highly personal. Lee Friedlander wins the 2005 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography 3/17/05 Here is kinda what Im thinking about changing my galleries to look like in the near future. Gallery test page.
3/13/05 - - - PAW #11 3/12/05 - - - 10:40am - Its snowing again! They say 6 more inches today, enough. Went to the Celtics game last night and they won in double overtime over the Pistons. Definately the best game of the year and I cant wait to play them in the playoffs. The only thing I dont like about seeing the games live is the music is so loud you cant even hear yourself talk, I dont know how the players can talk to each other sometimes. And between periods they have a leprechan doing slam dunks and mini parachutes floating down into the crowd. That stuff I can do without. Im still trying to come up with a new way to display my photos on my website. Ive been checking out a lot of websites to get ideas so maybe I'll come up with something soon. Im toying with an idea to go without any thumbnails and have a group of photos on one continuous page that scrolls to the right instead of scolling down, or up depending how you look at it. Ive seen a few sites do this and I kind of like it. Its sort of like holding a strip of film in your hand you just processed and pulling it through as you check to see if you have shot anything worthwhile. At least it seems that way to me. 3/7/05 - - - 7:30pm - Traffic to my site has been up lately thanks to the codes for the photoblog ring, black and white photography ring and listings with different photoblog directories. I guess thats a good thing. I like that people are seeing my photography and some are curious enough to come back. Im still looking at the Olympus XA camera, but then today I was thinking that I probably have enough cameras and that the money would be better spent buying film and paper. I really dont do a ton of shooting in the winter and with spring not too far away I should start stocking up on the essentials instead of new toys. Ive got the aperture priority Yashica Electro, the fully manual Lynx 14 and the Lynx 5000 so thats enough camera gear Ive decided.(at least that's what Ive decided tonight) Nikon FM2 / TriX
3/6/05 1:15pm - PAW #10 - - - 10:50am - Whenever I find a website dedicated to good black
and white photography it makes me happy. Here's one I came upon in
the Black and White photography webring. The owner of the site has
chosen 4 of my images for a current gallery on fire escapes. He has
a new subject each month you can submit to. 3/4/05 - - -8:50pm- Ive been taking a little break from the journal during the week just because Im kinda burnt out on the whole technology thing a little. I just needed some time away from it. Stacey and I have made flight arrangements to go to D.C. in May to stay over and see the Kertesz show at the National Gallery of Art. Ive read that its a pretty huge retrospective of his lifetime of work so Im really excited to see this. Its one thing to see his images in books, but to see the actual prints will be really amazing to me. Stacey just booked her 20th wedding for this season!! Quite a milestone, considering her previous high was 8 last year, and it looks like she's going to book some more soon. Lets see, what else is going on? Well, everyone around here is getting excited about the Celtics again. I dont really think they will be winning it all this year, though some people think it could happen.Winning a round in the playoffs would be great as far as Im concerned. But you never know..... Ive been reading about the Olympus XA camera lately and it looks interesting to me. Its really small and unobtrusive and has a reputation for having a great lens. Here's a website that is dedicated to the XA and those models that followed. The best thing about it is its price, if you check out ebay. The tricky part will be making sure to get one that is working. Minor detail. I may bid on one next week when I get paid. The XA is aperture priority which in some situations is really cool, especially when Im shooting night stuff or in low light. Sometimes its fun not to have to worry about all the camera settings. Of course one can control the shutter speed when you want to just by adjusting the ASA dial. I think Im rambling a little now, but so what. The Celtics are winning tonight's game by 20 points and the Fleetcenter is sold out for the second night in a row. That hasnt happened for a while. I have tickets to go to a game next Friday night against the Detroit Pistons who of course won the championship last year. It'll be a good test to see where the C's really stand.
