April 05

April 29

I just rescanned the church photo below at a bigger size to see how the detail looks. Here it is. I'm pretty happy with it actually.

Ive been trying to get better at my scanning and I thought this would be a good one to practice on. Lots of detail. If you look closely you can see a man standing on the lower left of the image. He was watching me the whole time I was there shooting like I was up to something I shouldnt be.

April 26 / Came across this website that has a fictional documentary short film about Andre Kertesz. When you go to the link, click on the picture of the man on the right. My Yashica GT that I won on ebay is on its way here. It'll take a while coming from England though. Maybe I'll have it before we go to Washington for the Kertesz show in two weeks.

April 26 / 12am

6 pm / This is becoming one of my favorite places in the city to shoot.

------------------------------------------------------------------

April 24 / I just came across this site that I found interesting. No, the work isnt black and white.

So I just put up my Yahsica 5000e for sale on APUG. You need to be a member to buy and sell on their site, but if anyone is interested and into camera repair or need parts just email me for info. I havent used this camera too much as it does have an issue with light leaks. This may just be a light seal issue, otherwise the camera is mechanically sound and the glass is in great shape. I thought about selling the lynx 14 also, but Im too attached to the 1.4 lens, so I may have that one tuned up.

Just won the Yashica GT on ebay, it'll replace my GSN which is in rough shape. It has the same lens, 40mm 1.7 as the GSN. I still have the Lynx 14 and 5000e to use also, though they both have minor problems to be dealt with.

April 23 / PAW # 17

Here's a few more from this week:

big sunglasses

display wigs

downtown buildings

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Developed 2 rolls of TriX this am and it looks good. I'll have a new photo of the week tomorrow on my home page. Now that Ive got this mammoth screen to work on Im not quite sure about the best way to size my websites pages. I checked my sites stats and the most popular sceen size setting is 1024 X 768 so Im kinda using that as my guide, but Im not gonna worry too much about it. Also, Im finding that I like Safari and Firefox browsers more than Explorer, so Im deciding which to use most.

I'll be redoing my galleries soon(hopefully). Im just trying to decide the best way to present the photos, keeping it simple and clean looking designwise. I know some of the 04 PAW images are still linked to my old galleries so they can be accesed that way for now but that'll be changing. Stay tuned...oh yeah, any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

April 22 / I have some new film to develop tomm and Im anxious to see some of the images on there. Of course whenever Im anticipating some good stuff Im usually dissapointed, but we'll see. Also, Im looking at a Yashica Electro GT on ebay and have been emailing the seller a few times for info.I am skeptical about ebay usually, but this one sounds legit. My GSN is on its last legs I think so I need to replace it. The GT is very similar, but is black.

Also, our trip to Washington is only A couple weeks away. The main reason for going is the Kertesz show at the National Gallery of Art.- And Stacey has never been to DC.

Starting to work on a new look for the website. Please be patient if some stuff looks a little mixed up for a little while.

April 19 / Providence has some amazing architecture downtown. Here is one example. Every city needs a watch hospital, right? Actually this is now the entrance to Big Nazo. I'll be posting some more architecture images soon. I hope with all the revival happening downtown these buildings will be preserved and not replaced by cookie cutter structures.

6:45pm / PAW #16. An attempt at something a little different for me this week. Providence holds many street fairs and tastings over the summer, so Im going to try a little different style at these events. Here are a couple more from this same day. Im still considering buying an Olympus XA soon which I think would be a great camera for this type of work. I just dont trust ebay with cameras so I may give Adorama or B&H a try.

April 16

6:30pm / Finally got out to do a few hours of shooting and it went well except for the fact that the shutter on my Electro GSN is sticking. It was usable but would jam up every few frames and after fussing with it I could get it working again. Ive had it for almost 2 years without any problems so maybe its time to buy a new one or go back to my 5000e, which has a light leak, and see if I can fix it. Also, my auctions on ArtByUS are about to end tomorrow with nothing sold(no surprise.) I may list some more tomorrow. If anyone buys a print before Sunday is done I'll give you any print of your choice on my website for free. Gonna go see if I have any chemicals left to develop the film I shot today.

10:30am / Since we started up the new computer I havent been able to get our scanners to work until just now. Not quite sure what fixed it, but I uninstalled the software and started from scratch and voila. I've been wanting to print this image in the darkroom for a while, but somehow the negative got this really bad scratch where the emulsion is actually lifted right in the middle. So, yes, I scanned the negative and did my best to fix in photoshop. If you look closely you can see my poor workmanship on the bright area of the image where the sun is coming in the room. I may work on it some more since I think its worth having. Though it bothers me I dont have a good print of it to look at. Maybe I should go back to this spot and try to reshoot.

April 12 / PAW #15. Better late than never. I think this is one of my favorite shots. I was a bit startled when this dog jumped onto the fence but I had just taken one other photo of him before he jumped and I managed one more frame before I quickly backed away. Yikes, lets just say he wasnt asking me to pet him. Of course the fact that I was holding the leash of my own dog, a black lab, at the same time may have added to the excitement of this animal.

April 10 / Christopher Rauschenberg rephotograph's Atget's Paris. Its amazing how little many of these street scenes have changed. Also, check out the audio interview for some interesting comments on how Rauschenberg works. Then try the Lens culture website archives that feature the likes of Sally Mann, John Szarkowski, Daido Moriyama and a lot of other great photographers.

April 6

Wahoooo! How cool is this. We now have an imac G5 with 20" screen! I can work with both dreamweaver and explorer open at the same time and not have anything overlapping and getting in the way. And my screen isnt blue like the old imac I was working with before. The other thing making me so very happy is the warm weather. As far as shooting it hasn't been happening a lot latley Ive been so busy working late and with stuff going on during the weekends. Tomm. after work Im planning to go downtown for a while and shoot.I Cant wait, I love the light this time of year around 5:30 or 6PM.

April 3 - Red Sox / Yankees tonight!

My auctions on ArtByUs ended today, but I relisted many of them for 2 more weeks. No sales yet, but maybe if I decide to keep trying for a couple months something will sell. I also added paypal to my payment options to make it easier for buyers.

PAW #14 is an image of the headquarters of local puppetteers Big Nazo. Go to most any event around the city and your likely to find into these guys running around. As far as the image itself, I know it looks like there are scratches going across the middle of the photo, but its actually a fence across the street reflected in the window. I could have cloned it out as it may be a little distracting, but thats too much manipulation for me. Ive been to a certain photographer's website who is shooting digital and now starting to add grain to the digital images by using a program to replicate the look of TriX or other B/W films. I know its going to happen more and more, but it just seems less authentic to me- if thats the right word Im looking for. The whole digital process seems to clean and too easy for this type of photography. I dont need the images I make to be absolutely perfect technically, thats not why I make them, you know? Look through books with images by some of the greats( Kertesz, Evans for example)and see how many of those photos have technical flaws. Some of the most famous photos ever made have technical flaws if you look close enough.
